Well, summer is coming to a close. (Especially for the teachers!) We are headed into a new school year full of fun and excitement! I need to begin with my apologies about not keeping this site up to date last year and I will do a much better job of it this year!
This site is for everybody! Please keep your comments clean because this is an open site that will have readers of all ages. Obscene comments and comments that are generally disrespectful will be immediately removed and the user will be blocked. Just a fair warning! :)
Please keep in mind that you will need to keep in contact with your child's teacher(s) to make sure that all your questions can be answered. The information provided here will be general and we will keep you as informed as possible but it will not always be specific to a class or teacher.
Monday, August 19th is the first day of school for all students at the Westwood Site. For those of you returning to our school- Welcome back! For those of you new to our school- Welcome! We have some fun things planned for this year and it all begins with the Back to School BBQ on August 15th from 5:30-7:00. You can come and meet your child's teacher and there will be important information handed out that night such as handbooks and classroom policies. It is a great time to ask any questions you may have and get to know the staff who make our school such a great success!
I know you were hoping to see the new building at the BBQ but due to construction issues, too long for this page, we will be in the Westwood building just a few more months. We should be moving back to the new building towards the end of October. Be watching for more information on this as it becomes available.
As in the past classroom procedures will remain the same for the most part with the 30 minute flooding time every day and the walk to read in all grade levels. The incoming Kindergartners will not have a full day of school until Thursday, August 22. They will be working with the kindergarten teachers for placement on August 19-21. You should have received the information on their "special hours" in the orientation packet. They will have some assessing to help make the classes as comfortable as possible for the students and teachers to make sure their learning experiences are as enjoyable as they should be when beginning school.
Please be thinking about being a part of the school's PTO! We can always use people with fresh ideas! We have a couple fun nights for the families of Southridge and can use all the help we can get!
We have made a few changes with the staff at Southridge. Shirla Loutas, our Speech/Language Pathologist has retired as wells as our Special Educator, Sue Allen and our Playground Supervisor/Yellow Zone worker Mary Kampa. Jennifer Greenup, our social worker, has moved to private practice. Jessica Christensen has moved to Bozeman, Montana and we welcome back Tera Sedustine to take her place. Jason Oland is now the Special Educator and Alisha Hill has moved to take his Tutor position. Since that left a vacant spot in first grade we welcome Emma Rice in Alisha Hill's place. In second grade, Sheila Zweifel has taken the job as Special Education Assistant and Wendy Doctor, former third grade, has moved to take Sheila's place. Since Wendy Doctor moved to second grade, we needed to fill the third grade vacancy. We welcomed Jennifer Bonnett into this position. Confused yet? HAHA!
Now is the time to begin getting your child ready for the school year if you haven't already. Summer can throw us all off and makes the first couple of school days difficult. Some students have a hard time adjusting to times and schedules. The first days can be long and trying. A lot of students are not prepared for set eating schedules either. As a parent, I am making bedtime earlier with earlier wake-up times. I'm also making sure my kids are only eating at certain times of the day. Good sleep and a good breakfast help ensure a positive learning experience. :-)
I am excited to see everyone on August 15th at the BBQ!
